One of the greatest impacts of “drones” coming into our lives is the impact it has on photojournalism. Drones can go places that photographers just can’t go by foot. Here is a story that illustrates this perfectly (though its only relation to photography is the drone involved). According to ABC, a couple of teenagers – Chris Harris and a friend – were staying at their family’s vacation home by a lake, and when evening came, they tied their boat to a buoy and went about their business....

First introduced by Kodak back in 1888, the box camera is one of the simplest forms of camera out there. Popular until halfway through the 20th century, they started to disappear as 35mm SLRs and rangefinders started to take over. Although not as popular as they once were, film is seeing a resurgence and they’ve come back into demand. So much so that Hamm Camera Company have started up a Kickstarter campaign to launch the NuBox 1, a new medium format box camera with interchangeable lenses....

Well, it wasn’t much of a surprise, really, was it? Images always seem to leak a couple of days ahead of official announcements these days. This time, it’s the Panasonic S5’s turn. The complete specs for the new camera were leaked a couple of weeks ago, and Panasonic teased us with an S5 trailer in the last few days, stating that it’s aimed at content creators. Now we know what the whole thing looks like, and it looks like they might’ve gotten it right....

Entaniya’s fisheye lenses for GoPro cameras have proven to be quite popular since they were initially released. They led to the creation of something Entaniya calls “One Shot VR“. This is essentially footage shot with a single 250° fisheye lens and then mapped into a VR sphere. It doesn’t contain the complete surroundings, but as long as you don’t need to look directly behind you, it does a pretty good job....

This has to be one of the silliest things I’ve seen for a while. Not the product itself, but how it’s being marketed. Iris claims to offer professional automated headshots in a booth for $20. Your $20 gets you a “photo session” including half a dozen shots, “helpful posing tips”, and one free high res digital file (the other 5 cost an extra $5 each). When you watch the promo video, don’t worry, your speakers aren’t broken, there’s just no audio to go with it....
