One of the drone regulations is not to fly over groups of people. However, the FAA has recently granted a waiver that grants to CNN to use of drones over large crowds. Back in December my brother asked me if I would be interested in going to Comic Con in Indianapolis, IN, and I immediately said absolutely! In his mind, he was excited to see what comic books he could find or the hard to find vinyl POP figure or possibly a GI Joe collectible, but in my mind I knew I was going there to photograph people in their costumes. These couldn’t be just any images though… I mean come on, the lighting at the event is going to be gross, the crowds will be huge, I’ll have to fight for space… This seems like 360 degrees of complexity....
I believe taking good nightlife shots isn’t easy. You need to capture the atmosphere, but at the same time remain discrete and not be pushy. Photographer Roy Bridgewood did a great job photographing an A-list Cirque le Soir party. He captured great moments, flamboyant costumes and burlesque atmosphere with a dash of creepiness. And he did it all using minimal gear and many restrictions, and he shared some shooting details and his story with us....
I’ve seen some pretty weird cameras during my days here at DIYP.
