It’s been a minute since we last heard anything about the Lightroom-powered Zeiss ZX1 camera. Almost a whole year, in fact. It was first announced rather quietly at Photokina 2018 last September followed by a brief hands-on in December, but since then it’s been radio silence. Now it looks like it might be one step closer to actually being released after support for its DNG files was added to the latest Adobe Camera Raw 12....

The tilt-shift effect has become really popular in recent years as more people have discovered that these lenses exist and the miniaturising effect they can have. But tilt-shift lenses are expensive, so many people resort to faking the effect in post. No matter how much work you put into it, though, an effect you add on the computer is never going to look quite like shooting it for real. But if your wallet’s crying at the price of tilt-shift lenses, don’t worry....

One of the great things about digital photography is that it stores metadata within the files of each your photos. It allows you to have a permanent, searchable archive of every image you’ve ever shot. Right now, I can quickly and easily go search for any photograph I’ve shot in the last 21 years (I switched to DSLRs in ’02) and see exactly what camera and lens I used, as well as the exposure settings and other information....

I’m lucky with my photography. It’s almost all on location, but I mostly get to choose the location myself. They’re places I’m familiar with, that I’ve scouted regularly for several years. So I know what to expect when I show up, where the light’s going to fall at different times of day or year. For a lot of photographers shooting on location, though, you’re often in locations you’re only just seeing for the first time....

Remember when we were kids searching for shapes in the clouds? Okay, I still do it, but looks like I’m not the only one. Michael Shainblum’s recent image shows a dragon approaching – and “the dragon” is made of storm clouds. I was blown away by the photo, so I chatted with Michael a bit about how he took it. Michael was actually chasing a storm to shoot, but he also took photos of some cacti before the dark....
