I have captured photos of stars above distant thunderstorms before, but I never imagined I would be able to capture the Milky Way above a nearby thunderstorm. While out storm chasing in Eastern Montana on June 4, 2018, that’s exactly what happened. See the before and after of the above image at the end of this post! We left our home base around 11 AM and drove about 3 hours to get to our target city where we grabbed a bite to eat and waited patiently for storms to develop....

Unless we are an automotive photographer, getting access to fancy cars at the environments in which we’d like to photograph them can be a tricky proposition. But what can we do with those images of cars we get on the street or at shows? In this video tutorial from Tutvid, photographer Nathaniel Dodson shows us how we can cut out those cars and composite them realistically into other scenes to give us the images we want....

Macro is a challenging subject to photograph. Light, especially, can be a real struggle, so you often need to add extra light to overcome the bellows extension factor inherent in all true macro lenses. But dedicated macro flashes and ring flashes can be very expensive (at least if you want a good one). Are there other options? Well, you can butcher a Pringles tube. We posted a tutorial on this way back in 2011 to be able to make use fo the popup flash for macro, but this video from photographer Micael Widell shows a similar method using an on-camera flash, allowing you to get much more power for those extreme close-ups....

If you follow Eric Paré’s work, you know him for stunning light painting photos. He uses all sorts of tubes to paint with light, but this time, he had to improvise. He and his girlfriend Kim Henry created a dress, jewelry and a tube for the shoot using only stuff they found in a hotel room. Some paper, a shower curtain, and a towel did a trick – and they ended up with pretty cool shots....
